Cultural Stay Chantilly | Château de Montvillargenne

Have you always wanted to visit the Château de Chantilly and the surrounding area? Located just a few dozen kilometers from Paris, this jewel of French heritage is accessible all year round, and can be visited for a day or a weekend. An ideal visit for couples for its romantic atmosphere, for families to introduce their children to art and architecture, or for friends to spend a pleasant and enriching time together.

An outing to the Château de Chantilly is always a good idea, and is sure to delight young and old alike. But before you plan your visit, you should know that the Château de Chantilly is part of the "Domaine de Chantilly". This includes the Château, the Musée Condé, the park, the Grandes Écuries and the Musée du Cheval. A single day at the Domaine de Chantilly is not enough for a complete visit. A weekend is more appropriate if you wish to discover the full extent of the region's riches.

Discover the Musée Condé, with its impressive collection of ancient paintings and its library of rare books. With 800 works, it is the2nd largest collection of ancient paintings after the Louvre, and one of the finest museums in France. As for the immense park, designed by Le Nôtre, it invites reverie with its Grand Canal and water features. Finally, the Grandes Ecuries stage equestrian shows throughout the year. They are also home to the Musée du Cheval de Chantilly, a modern, fun and interactive museum that opened in 2014 and features 200 works of art based on the history of the horse.

Château de Chantilly, a place steeped in history

The Château de Chantilly is famous the world over! A jewel of our cultural heritage, it combines nature and culture with majestic elegance. Shaped from the Middle Ages to the 19th century by its successive owners, the Chantilly estate and its château are inextricably linked to the history of France. To discover the Château de Chantilly is also to (re)discover the history of our country.

In the Middle Ages, the château was built on a rock in the marshes of the Nonette valley, on the road from Paris to Senlis. But the Hundred Years' War raged, and the fortified castle was pillaged in 1358. Thirty years later, the Orgemont family bought the estate and had a veritable fortress built. From then on, the estate was inherited rather than sold.

During the Renaissance, Anne de Montmorency, minister to François I, inherited the Château de Chantilly. His pronounced taste for Italian aesthetics gave him the idea of building a château in the French Renaissance style, which was simply an adaptation of the Italian style. From the 17th century onwards, the Chantilly estate was transformed. With nothing to envy the splendor of the Château de Versailles, the gardens were laid out by Le Nôtre. However, wars destroyed part of the estate...

In the 19th century, Henri d'Orléans, son of the last French king Louis Philippe and considered the greatest collector of his time, decided to rebuild the Grand Château. His goal: to house his art collections. In 1898, the estate opened its doors to the public and is still considered one of the most beautiful princely residences.
